at the point a sign .
is not enough deterrent .
a lock is added

is it innate to human nature to want to know what is behind a closed door, in a locked file, beyond a chained gate? the phrase, “none of your business,” makes us curiouser, sometimes to the point of illegal entry. i had no interest in this door or what was behind it until i saw the sign and the added-later lock and hasp. what had been just a somewhat grimy, nondescript door in a passageway between galleries took on elevated importance. what was back there that needed to be protected by a hastily installed hardware store purchase? not that i would ever check; not so much because i have a profound respect for “none of your business,” as much as it is i’ve got the experience to know that imagination will most often create a much better story than any truth that’s being protected.
